Number

I.
Language of the heavens does inspire,
in number does the world express desire,
as conversation underpins it all
with information as the basic call.

In sacred steps the calculations rise,
each digit stands as true material prize,
the cipher does a firm foundation set,
so all is manifested, then and yet.

In robes of full imagining they stand,
cardinal and decimal go hand in hand,
integer and prime in serious dance,
as whole and ordinal do then advance.

Statistic, sum and total take the floor,
in steady counting now and evermore,
denominator, fractions do apply;
symbols which do make the angels sigh.

II.

The world does sing in number,
ancient songs of true connection,
drawing through the ages, all
that we can be, and that which will
be made manifest, through pure
and calculated imagining; rocked
gently in the cradle of becoming,
listening to the crooning of angels
who alone can speak the language
of mathematics birthing soul.

  1. The second poem is like a summary of the first, very succinct and impressive. But I really love the line:
in number does the world express desire...
as well as the image the following 2 lines conjure up:

cardinal and decimal go hand in hand,
integer and prime in serious dance,

  2. I heard an intriguing philosophic discussion the other day.. if nature is broken down to it's smallest part.. there are nothing but numbers.. and then it would mean that mathematics is more than a language.. it's actually the reality as such.. To me I can read that from your poem...

    1. Yes, and my fascination with number has had me reading many books, saying similar things. Then again, Jung said symbol is the lost language of the soul and number is symbol.

  3. Roslyn--these are so meaningful. There are many metaphysical aspects to numbers. I confess, it was nice to read something with meaning! :0) Although the others are fun.

  5. i think beneath all the things that happen is a carpet of math that is way more complicated than we ever imagine....and a genius brain who holds it all together... love how art dances on that stage the numbers set

  7. I feel as though there are only va precious few who can hear the song of numbers you describe. I, myself, while I can't say I've heard of their own accord, do enjoy making them sing on occasion.

  8. This is a fine well expressed poem. My husband literally thought in numbers and formulas. Instead of being weird, it was a door to a completely different world for me. He gave me insights into the ordinary I would never ever have had. Your poem does that as well. Beautiful.
