Choices

How often do we make a choice,
where we do really choose,
instead of being led by life
as thoughts and feelings move?
Decisions are so often made
through things beyond our knowing:
what we believe and feel and think,
without it ever showing.
What pushes us to take a path,
accept or turn aside,
is often pure unconsciousness
with reason not required.

  1. I think you have made a good point here...that we sometimes are led by pure unconscious and do not really CHOOSE. We just follow a path, first here and then there. I really see where your poem is coming from.

But if we think deeply, perhaps everything we do is a choice, from the most minute thing (getting up in the morning) to the big decisions (what career path to follow) and so on.

    1. I believe Mary that when we become more mindful we are better able to make choices or at least, have the greatest opportunity to actually do so. When we are self-aware we can respond as opposed to react.

  2. Yes, you are so right! I've made a few rotten choices, many good choices ... the best ones are those I don't give a lot of thought to, just go on my instincts.

    1. It sounds as if you are highly intuitive Helen and that is worth knowing when it comes to making choices.

  4. you are right in that sometimes reason is not required....and in the end we are the ones that have to live with those decisions as well...so we are the ones that have to make them...instead of letting them be made for us...
