Is this world exactly as we see it,
or is it as we think it should be,
and in the doing, make it manifest
in ways beyond our imagining?
Is there such a thing as sound if
there is no ear to hear it, or is what
we call sound, no more than invisible
waves, rolling out from circumstance?
Is love real in the ways that we believe,
or, is it a need, desire, determination
to connect, hardwired into us before
we are born and in need of a name?
Is the past a reality, formed and held
enduring, in some unseen place, beyond
our ability to know other than fragments
of that which we call memories?
Is there anything which we can claim
is absolutely real, or is all that we feel,
see, experience, no more than intangible
workings, which blink in and out of being?
Is there an answer to all of our questions,
or, just more questions, lingering in the
darkness, waiting for the light of curiosity
to shine, brightly but briefly upon them?

The question about love and "hardwiring" I've wondered about. We don't have "wires" so the metaphor isn't accurate and the underlying determinism is not true, but we do have propensities that we follow. They take us outside of ourselves. Then, I think, outside our individual bodies love becomes real as we believe it to be.
ReplyDeleteWe do have the equivalent of hardwiring - synaptic connections.
DeleteGood question:
ReplyDelete'Is there such a thing as sound if

Sound is vibration impacting the ear-drum so no ear-drum no sound as we would know it.
DeleteThis goes deep into what Philosophers have tried to answer over the centuries (when the importance was really to pose the questions) I was thinking about Plato's cave, Descartes and many others. Really good.
ReplyDeleteYes, unless we look outside the cave all we see are shadows.
DeleteIf we never venture to question, we're not ready for the answers in any case. But these seem to inspire and give great cause to ponder, Joslyn. I like this.
ReplyDeleteYes, questions beget questions, if you're on the right track;)
ReplyDeleteA poetic review of unanswered questions ... food for man's unending curiosity. Well said.
ReplyDeleteIs love real in the ways that we believe,
ReplyDeleteor, is it a need, desire, determination
to connect,
Lovers all over had been hankering over this since the beginnings of times! Very true Roslyn!
Hank
Big questions, beautifully constructed.
