Palestine aches

The dead have silent teeth and empty throats,
they have no voice with which to speak, to cry
of all the horrors they have seen and been and
known; to call for justice, freedom from the

power of those who kill to claim what is not
theirs, the land of others, who suffocate children
in waves of dust and shredded metal moments,
where blood and tears and destiny are driven

deep into the waiting earth; dressing broken
fragments of their lives, their souls, their
hearts, that costuming of evil which war does
primp and posture into place, for those who

are the victims, for those who cannot speak,
and for whom the only hope can be for others,
that their throats are not empty, their teeth
are not silent, their words are not crushed

beneath the boot of evil and injustice and
military might, and that in the darkened
quietness of this awful, suppurating wound,
their only hope is that the voices of the living

will be speaking out for those who lie strewn,
fleshed like scattered crops, in that harvest
which bleeds and grieves and slowly seeds
the fields of future justice in aching Palestine.

  1. A strong expression of what Palestine, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria are going through.

    1. None of the others have suffered the mortality and injury rates that Palestine has suffered and none of the others are fighting an occupier and coloniser who has crushed them violently for 75 years. But yes, death and suffering they all share.

  2. This must have been a tough one to write. But I think it applies to any nation whose future has been taken away from them.

    1. Yes, and more so to people who have been violently colonised and occupied by a far more powerful oppressor.

  3. So many atrocities committed and peace nowhere in sight, just spreading violence, all of which the imagery zeroes in on make us long even more for peace before another day claims another life.

    1. I like to believe justice is ultimately done and the Palestinians will be free after nearly a century of oppression.

  4. It seems at these times that all our development, all our knowledge, all research is just being remodelled to be better to kill each other.

    1. Unfortunately so for that is where the money is. We have lost our soul and with it our capacity for integrity. Not everyone but too many. We humans are more psychologically wounded at this point in history than ever before and some, like Israel, even more so.
